- The year 2006 marks the centennial opening of the Tautoro Native School
- The old school open on june 11th 1906
- The historical events leading up to the establishment of a Native School in the district began in 1903
- At the time it appeared that friction between Maori and pakeha flared up due to a dog tax being imposed by the Government.
- Iraia Kuao, paramount chief of the Ngati Moerewa tribe.
- Perepe , the Chief of the Ngati Hine tribe, joined forces with Iraia
- Mare tawhai, paramount chief of mahurehure tribe
- The maori were imprisoned in the billiard saloon.
- Iraia Kuao realised the hopelessness of trying to fight the Pakeha on the battlefield.
- Preparations were made at Tautoro for the melting of lead bullets for muzzle loaders.
